National Events Programme

EASTBOURNE, 14 - 21 July

Our allocation of rooms at the Albany Lions Hotel is fully booked but more rooms may become available nearer the time of the holiday.

Our annual summer break will be in Eastbourne at the Albany Lions Hotel on the sea front about 100 metres from the pier. Many rooms have a sea view although this cannot be guaranteed. Eastbourne is well situated for walks on the Eastern South Downs including Alfriston, Beachy Head and towards Battle and Hastings. Public transport is good for travel to the walks.

Eastbourne claims to be the sunniest place in Britain! There is on street parking at £1 per day. There are through trains to Eastbourne from London Victoria. Priority will be given to those staying for the full seven nights.

The price pppn for dinner bed and breakfast is £50 single and £45 sharing twin/double. The deposit is £50.

This break is now fully booked. For the August Bank Holiday we will be staying at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, the largest town in the Cotswold district. The college was founded in 1840.

Getting there

  • Train to Swindon then a bus.
  • Train to Kemble station (three miles from Cirencester), then a bus, 93 which appears to pass the college. Or taxi, eg Cirencester Radio Cars 01285 650850 or Kevs-Kabs 07852 491573.
  • There is a National Express service to Cirencester from London.
  • By road: M4 Motorway, Jnct. 15 (A419); M5 Motorway, Jnct. 13 (A419) or Jnct. 11A (A417); M40—A40 to beyond Burford, the B425 to Bibury and Cirencester Fosse Way.

The Walks Here are some possible walks, to be confirmed nearer the time. Volunteers to lead would be appreciated. I already have an offer to lead an A walk and B walk. We will need to drive to a walk on at least one day.

  • Friday: A walk into the town to find out where the shops are, and maybe a bit of a tour!
  • An 8 mile walk (plus the walk from the college so 11 in total) from the centre of Cirencester, which takes in 'lovely old villages, fine churches and extensive views.' Same route for A and B parties. Possibly.
  • A 7 mile walk from Crickley Hill (N.T) in the Cotswolds. It would involve a 20 minute drive (13 to 15 miles from the college). The walk offers 'two of the finest views on the Cotswold escarpment of Cheltenham and across the Vale of Severn.' Again, A and B can be same route, with a possible extension to the A walk.
  • A 10 mile walk from the college, a Kemble circular which includes the source of the Thames. This can be extended to 13 miles for the A walk.

Evening entertainment As we will have our own lounge we may as well make the most of it so any ideas are welcome.

Bookings All of our reserved places have now been taken. It may be possible to book independently with the college at the higher standard prices - please see their website for details.

Very limited availability remains for our weekend at the Glaramara Outdoor Centre. If interested, please get in touch WITHOUT DELAY!

Accommodation We now have only two en-suite twin/double rooms remaining, however it may be possible to let at least one of these rooms go on a sole occupancy basis for a supplement of £10 per night.

Meals As usual, the price includes all evening meals, breakfasts and packed lunches.

Walks There is plenty of good walking available directly from the Centre, although we may use local buses or cars to travel further afield. As usual, it is intended to offer a choice of full-day led walks on the Saturday and Sunday. Given that this is the Lake District, expect the walking to be more strenuous than in other locations.

Our allocation of rooms at the Cumbria Grand Hotel has been booked but more rooms may become available nearer the time of the event.

Our Autumn Walking weekend will be at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, Grange over Sands. Sunday's walk will be dedicated to the memory of Absent Friends.

The price pppn for dinner bed and breakfast is £65 single and £45 sharing twin or double. The deposit is £30. Priority will be given to those staying for 3 nights.

The weekend at Eastfield Lodge which had to be cancelled in March has now been rescheduled as a pre-Christmas event.

The accommodation arranged for the group at Eastfield Lodge is fully booked.  However there should be alternative accommodation available in Leyburn for independent bookers, and some Footprints members have already booked accommodation for the weekend.  I hope to arrange evening meals for the Friday and the Saturday night for the whole group.

LA PALMA, CANARIES, 31 January - 7 February 2019

There has been an annual trip to Spain / The Canaries for the past 6 years and some of the regulars are keen to continue with these trips. It is therefore proposed to revisit la Palma in 2019.

We will be staying at the H10 Taburiente Playa in La Palma, a 3 star Hotel with half board - either booked as a package or booked independently.

Flights with TUI are only available on Sunday or Thursday from Manchester, and only on Thursday from Gatwick, thus the holiday will be from Thursday to Thursday.

Prices are (currently)
- from Manchester £519
- from Gatwick £514.

There is the possibility of booking flights/hotel independently, but details of independent flights are not yet available.

There would be some use of public transport but also car hire. We would need people to volunteer to drive.

Anyone wanting to help with organising/leading walks would also be very welcome. Walks would be arranged on 5 days with a day off for sightseeing etc.

Further details to follow – in the meantime if you wish to go or merely register interest please contact the organiser before booking.
